feng shui of london

London is one of the most celebrated and exciting cities in the world. It is not only the capital city of the United Kingdom (UK), it is the world’s leading commercial, financial and cultural centre. It is a city of character, courage and above all, perpetual change.  What has Feng Shui got to do with it?

What is Feng Shui? A Chinese system of Land Management helps people live in harmony and get favourable outcomes. Like all Chinese metaphysics, it is based on the flow of energy (qi). There are many facets of this energy – quantity, quality and timeliness.

In a nutshell, when an area gets a good flow of energy, and this energy can be retained, it will be a prosperous area.

Conversely, areas that are prosperous have good feng shui. There is a source of energy, and this energy is not dispersed but kept.

Structure of Feng Shui of London Article:

The post has been divided into nine sections where I discuss the individual area - the source of the energy and the prosperity of the location. There is also some analysis of outstanding buildings which relate to London’s historical past and present.

  1. South East England
  2. Temple (Strand and Fleet Street)
  3. The City of London
  4. Canary Wharf
  5. Marylebone - energy from Regent's Park
  6. Knightsbridge - energy from Hyde Park
  7. Mayfair - energy from both Hyde Park and Regent’s Park
  8. Portland Place and Regent Street
  9. Whitehall & Westminster
  1. South East England

How prosperous is this area?

London is the economic beating heart of the UK. In 2015, London’s (GDP) is £378 billion, which accounts for 22.9% of UK GDP (£1,651 billion). The South East of England contributes a further 15.1%. Together this makes it a total of 38%.  Literally, this area contributes about 38% to the British economy with 12% of the population and 6% of the land.

This has not been a flash in the pan. London has been a prosperous trading post since the Roman times some two thousand years ago.

01 Feng Shui London

Why is it prosperous? In Feng Shui parlance, the energy is brought in by the River Thames, and it is held within the river basin bounded by the two ranges of hills north and south of London.

The River Thames flows through the centre of London and the South East. The source of the river is at Thames Head in the Cotswold, North West of London. Therefore, the river flows into a large river basin which reaches some 30 to 50 miles from central London.

It is surrounded by a series of hills - The Chilterns (North West and North), the Downs (South West, South and South East). This energy from the River is retained in the surrounding areas within the hills.

It is the size of this basin that gives London the ability to expand outwards easily. London has easy access to continental Europe through the sea. This has helped it become a large port and a trading hub since Roman times. All these features make London unique.

If you venture outside this region, especially on the other side of the hills, you can feel the change of energy. The road traffic is less busy, and the shops, cafes, and restaurants in the towns and villages have less activity. There is an air of relaxation compared to the frenetic pace of London.

  1. Temple (Strand and Fleet Street)

This is the area for the Inns of Court and the Royal Courts of Justice. The area for lawyers and the British Judicial System. The British Legal System is used in many countries throughout the world.

There are also many types of law: commercial, marine, intellectual property (patents), and Family Law (like divorce) used in British courts. English Contract law is the most used and important contract law in international business. This expertise is concentrated in this area of London.

02 Feng Shui London 1

Feng Shui Analysis: The energy, with the properties of Power and Money, from the River bend goes into the green lawns of the Inns of Courts (Association of Lawyers) to the Strand where the Royal Courts of Justice and Central Criminal Court (Old Bailey) are located. The Inns of Court are on the land where the energy from the River settles.

  1. The City of London

This is the origins of London and the commercial heart of London (Financial District). It is known as the City of London (City), located within a square mile. The roads are the original paths laid down probably more than a millennium ago.

After the Great Fire of London in 1666, there were plans to re-design the City, but the City Fathers wanted the reconstruction of the City as quickly as possible as they wanted to re-start their business.

These original roads had already laid the path to success. These are the roads that bring in the energy directly into this area. This has led the City to be a world-leading successful trading hub for more than a thousand years.

03 Feng Shui London

The centre of this Financial District is the Bank of England. It is by Bank Junction where 6 streets converge. Directly in front of the Bank is an open space with the “London Troops War Memorial”.

Feng Shui Analysis: The energy from the River goes up Queen Victoria Street to the Bank of England. This energy spreads up to Bishopsgate to the East and London Wall to the North. This is the core of the City of London.

  1. Canary Wharf

This is a new business district constructed in the late 20th Century and was previously one of the docks of the Port of London. This is now London’s second financial district, and it was designed with feng shui from conception.

There are over 100,000 people who work there, and it is the Head Office of numerous banks, professional services and media organisations like Barclays, Clifford Chance, Credit Suisse, HSBC, Thomson Reuters etc. It is a transport hub in the London transport system with the nearby London City Airport.

04 Feng Shui London

If there was no Feng Shui design from the concept, the layout of Canary Wharf would have been a series of office tower blocks by the riverside. In this town planning, it is the offices on the riverside that would have been relatively prosperous, and the secondary sites would be very ordinary. This Canary Wharf design enables all the tenants in all the buildings to be in prosperous locations.

05 Feng Shui London

Feng Shui observations: The overall design of the buildings is an armchair configuration. It is designed to hold the incoming energy coming from the river bend at Limehouse. The energy going to Canary Wharf is from the West and carries the North West energy from the river source. This energy is all about Money and Power. This is the ideal type of energy for the types of businesses at Canary Wharf.

  1. Marylebone - energy from Regent's Park

London’s Parks and Energy

The main parks in London’s West End are Regent’s Park, Hyde Park, St James’s Park and Green Park. These parks attract and generate energy. This energy is distributed along the road systems around the park, which slope downwards to the river.

06 Feng Shui London

07 Feng Shui London

The energy leaves Regent’s Park along the roads between Baker Street (West) and Portland Place (East). This includes the prosperous areas of Marylebone and Oxford Street between Baker Street in the West (Selfridges) and Regent Street/Oxford Circus in the East (Top Shop).

This energy does not go East of Oxford Circus/Regent Street – viz Fitzrovia and Soho or West of Baker Street – Paddington.

Marylebone – This is the area for private Medical Care. It is centred around Harley Street. This area is a world-renowned centre of excellence in Medical Care. Patients from all over the world come for medical expertise in well-equipped and established facilities. This area receives energy directly from Regent’s Park.

Oxford Street is Europe’s busiest street in London, with more than half a million visitors daily. It receives energy from Regent’s Park. The street is wide, so it is possible for the energy to spread out along the street. This, however, occurs only between Baker Street and Oxford Circus. There are about 300 shops, many of which are flagship stores, including three department stores – Selfridges and John Lewis.

  1. Knightsbridge - energy from Hyde Park

Knightsbridge

The energy flows with the landform. To the south, the land slopes very gently down to the River past Knightsbridge, Kensington and Chelsea. This energy passes the world-renowned Royal Albert Hall, Imperial College, the Museums (Science, Natural History, Victoria & Albert) and, of course, Harrods,

One Hyde Park and the Mandarin Oriental Hotel. This area is a prime residential property which is always in demand by many people, especially overseas. The prices have risen constantly irrespective of the movement of the local house prices. These areas include Belgravia, Kensington and Chelsea.

  1. Mayfair - energy from both Hyde Park and Regent’s Park

The energy from Hyde Park flows East towards Mayfair. This energy is mixed with the energy from Regents Park. The Mayfair area is renowned for the luxury hotels – Dorchester, Hilton, Grosvenor, JW Marriott, Intercontinental and Four Seasons together with the exclusivity of the Area.

New Bond Street is the centre for luxury brands. Part of this energy then goes down to Piccadilly Circus. The remaining energy flows down to St James’s, which is another exclusive area for financial institutions like hedge funds, private equity and private clubs.

09 Feng Shui London

  1. Portland Place and Regent Street

The energy from Regent’s Park is collected in the Crescent-shaped funnel of Park Crescent. This funnel collects even more energy. This energy then flows down Portland Place and Regent Street to Piccadilly Circus. It has the stores which have the highest sales densities in the UK - The Apple store at £3,000 per sq ft, Burberry (£2,500 per sq ft) and Liberty (£1,200 per sq ft).

The energy then goes down to Trafalgar Square, to the River through Whitehall, were the Government offices and the Palace of Westminster (House of Parliament and House of Lords).

10 Feng Shui London

11 Feng Shui London

The Westside receives the energy from the Parks. The Eastside does not receive as much energy. The difference is vast. It is like two different worlds apart.

  1. Whitehall & Westminster

Green Park and St James’s Park with Buckingham Palace.

The energy from these two parks, together with the other two parks mentioned previously, flows down to Westminster. This is the district of Whitehall where the Government Offices, the Palace of Westminster (House of Commons and House of Lords). This area is on the banks of the River Thames. This district also receives energy directly from the River.

Buckingham Palace

12 Feng Shui London

Buckingham Palace has been the residence of the British Royal Family since 1761. The Queen, Elizabeth II, ascended to the throne in 1953. She has the longest reign in British history. The House of Windsor is known as the “family firm” and probably has the highest profile of any Royal Family in the World. It is highly respected and regarded throughout the UK and the world.

This building is located between Green Park and St James’s Park. Constitution Hill is the link between Hyde Park and the Palace.  This draws in the energy from Hyde Park to flow to the Palace. The Mall links Trafalgar Square to the Palace. Trafalgar Square is the collection point for energy that has come all the way from Regent’s Park through Regents Street and Haymarket. This straight road allows the energy to flow easily to the Palace.

The Palace is bathed in energy from all these sources. It is the best quality of energy at that.

Westminster and Whitehall - The UK is governed by this area.

13 Feng Shui London

The UK is a thriving nation. Since the Government Offices have been in this area, the UK has had an Empire spanning about one-quarter of the Earth’s land mass and population. It has fought many wars, and had both economic booms and busts with a rising level of standard of living and healthcare for the population. The main point which has been taken for granted is political stability. The political system, for what we think about its flaws, has been working for more than 300 years. There must be something right about the system and the buildings in this location.

There are essentially two sections.

Whitehall – the Offices of the Central Government.

Palace of Westminster (as known as House of Parliament )– The Legislature with the 2 Houses – House of Commons and the House of Lords.

Whitehall: This area was originally the residence (Palace of Whitehall) of the English Monarchs between 1530 to 1700AD. In 1700 AD, a fire destroyed the original buildings and the process of separation of the Government and the Monarchy started. Government Offices are now located in this area. They are on either side of the road called “Whitehall”, which is named after the area.

The road Whitehall connects Trafalgar Square with Westminster Bridge and the Palace of Westminster. Trafalgar Square is the collection point for energy coming all the way from Regents Park.

The 3 Main Offices of Government are:

With New Scotland Yard (Head Office of Metropolitan Police) and the The Palace of Westminster (House of Parliament - House of Commons and House of Lords)

Prime Minister’s Office at 10 Downing Street

14 Feng Shui London

This has been the official residence of the Prime Minister (First Lord of the Treasury) from the late 17th Century. The rise of the British Empire co-incidentally, started at the same time. Britain ruled the waves with a large empire which had about 25% of the earth’s land and the world’s population as well. The peak of the British Empire was in the 19th Century.

Downing Street appears to be hidden or inconspicuous (other than the security gates), and one might easily miss it. More importantly, how does the energy get in there?

On the south side of Downing Street is the Foreign and Commonwealth Building.

On the East side, or facing Whitehall, there is a slight protrusion. This protrusion allows energy moving down Whitehall to flow into Downing Street.

On the West Side facing Horse Guards Road, there is a much larger protrusion to collect the energy flowing down Horse Guards Road.

The energy comes in from both sides. This explains why 10 Downing Street is auspicious.

Ministry of Defence MOD

15 Feng Shui London

The UK has fought in many wars. It has won some but it has also lost some. Some of these battles have been for the very survival of the country.

The Main Entrance is on the North Side of the building. The energy coming down Whitehall, this energy goes down Horse Guards Avenue, passing the Entrance. This area is filled with energy.

HM Treasury

16 Feng Shui London

Britain has, for many decades, shuttled between the 2nd to the 5th largest economy in the world. Its Treasury has always been filled even in periods of austerity. The main point, it has always been filled.

The HM Treasury Building faces St James Park, which is filled with energy. It has the luck to make good decisions even though we might disagree with them.

New Scotland Yard (Head Office of Metropolitan Police)

17 Feng Shui London

Metropolitan Police have relocated to their new offices in Embankment. This is the 3rd location of their headquarters, called New Scotland Yard and back to the Embankment. We can look forward to Metropolitan Police to further enhancing its reputation as a modern-day police service in this new Headquarters.

These buildings receive energy from the River flow and from the energy passing down Whitehall.

The Previous Headquarters was in an anonymous office block in Victoria. The entrance in Broadway did not receive much energy. From the 1960s to 2016, Metropolitan Police has much criticism of its work.

The Palace of Westminster  (Parliament - House of Commons and House of Lords)

18 Feng Shui London

This is the legislative arm of the Government. It has 2 Chambers, the Lower House – The House of Parliament is for elected representatives (Members of Parliament) and the Upper House - House of Lords for nominated members.

Feng Shui Analysis: The Main Entrance of the Palace of Westminster.

In front are two open areas - Parliament Square Green & New Palace Yard. The Energies from 3 directions – Whitehall, St James’s Park and the River are mixed here. The energy from the River has the properties of Power and Money, which is ideally suited to the purpose of this building. This mix of energy then enters the Palace of Westminster.

Feng Shui of London Conclusion:

The river goes through London, bringing the energy with characteristics of Power and Money. These are the ideal properties for the nation’s capital and the world’s major commercial and financial centre.

London is in a river basin. The energy from the River is captured over a wide area. This prosperity can be spread over a wide area around the capital city.

19 Feng Shui London

Image 19: The latest bridge over the River Thames – The Millennium Bridge.

London is in the centre of the Basin of the River Thames. This Basin is enclosed by a series of hills which hold the Energy brought by the river. This area is known as South East England, and it is the most productive region of the UK.

In Central London, there are eight areas of London that get more energy:  Westminster, Temple, City of London, Canary Wharf, Marylebone, Mayfair, Knightsbridge and Whitehall.  These areas are also London’s most productive areas as well.

The River provides energy for three parts of London:

  • Temple
  • City of London
  • Canary Wharf

The Royal Parks provide energy for the other four parts.

  • Marylebone
  • Mayfair
  • Knightsbridge
  • Whitehall

Westminster gets energy from both the River and The Royal Parks.

The energy from the river is held in 3 parts in Central London. They have the requisite natural landscape to hold the energy. The flat land by the river bank and there is raised land at a short distance to stop the energy from being dissipated. These three locations are Westminster, Temple and The City of London. The 4th location in Canary Wharf, a building complex that was designed to be a large and prosperous centre for trade and finance.

The City and Canary Wharf are places for business-to-business dealing. High value and they involve the banks, legal and other financial services

The East End of London was the original starting place for many of London’s business. However, most of the successful businesses moved over to the West End. The East End was too cramped for the energy to flow smoothly.

The West End of London has 4 Royal Parks which accumulate energy. There is an efficient road system to distribute this energy down to the River. Businesses along these roads have become prosperous centres in London’s West End.

London’s West End specialises in businesses centred on the consumer like - retail, tourism & hospitality, education etc. The Areas of High energy are large, which enables many businesses to enjoy prosperity and become world leaders in many of their chosen fields.

It is these eight areas of London that make London special. From the Feng Shui perspective, they receive more energy. There is no better way to end this post by quoting Samuel Johnson:

“When a man is tired of London, he is tired of life”.
