What is Traditional Feng Shui?

1. It is an established method that has been used for centuries; practitioners work in teams using set procedures and interpret them strictly.

2. It uses energy – which is the primary mechanism for Chinese Metaphysics.

3. The same mechanism for exteriors and interiors

4. It is easily scalable from a single house to the planning of cities.

Traditional Feng Shui is a lineage system. The practice knowledge is passed down from one generation to the next in a 10-year training programme after a rigorous selection of the students.

The practice knowledge is an integrated or unified system that is based on the best available energies present in the environment to the targeted locations within the property.

a. An exploration of the surrounding area to locate the source or sources of the energy. It is a landform that determines the flow of energy to the property.

b. The energy going into the property is governed by two factors – The quantity and the quality of the energy.

c. The quality of the energy is determined by two factors

Feng Shui fundamentals – compass direction and time periods.

Flow characteristics – it is fast, slow, moderate, turbulence from an obstacle etc

d. The consultant then devises a “channel” for the energy to flow to the entrance of the property. The energy has to be prepared for the entrance –

e. The entrance hallway way is the distribution centre for the property.

The internal design in the property is to direct the energy to the appropriate locations and also away from the locations where energy can be lost – external doors, toilets etc.

f. The appropriate locations can be for:

Residential: bedroom, living room, study/home office

Business: sales area, offices of decision-makers.

Comment:

It is important to have feedback on knowing the quality and quantity of energy flowing at the various stages. Otherwise, the consultant would be working “blind”.

Marco Pierre White, a renowned celebrity Chef in the UK, made this comment.

“When you work with your hands, you are a labourer”.

You are an artisan when you work with your hands and brain”.

When you work with your heart as well, you are an artist”.

My interpretation of this is:

1. When you work with your hands, you are a labourer –an orders taker –following the recipe. This is very much like a junior chef.

2. When you work with your hands and brain, you are a proper chef where you use your senses to get the right taste in the presented food.

3. When you work with your heart, you are an artist – an exceptional chef. You know how to get the right flavours from the ingredients and get the right balance. Artist does not use recipes. They use their senses to get the presented food just right.

These artists can prepare incredible food from the simplest ingredients and fantastic sauces from starting materials like tomato ketchup.

So, how does that relate to the ten-year training programme in feng shui?

I have seen the top feng shui consultants work – no compass and no floor plans. By standing in the external environment, they identify the type of energy – the direction it came from and the properties (quality). They can work out precisely the type of energy around and recommend ways to bring this energy in and get it distributed internally. Their single focus is on getting the best result for the client.

These consultants are at the top of their profession. I would consider them to be “artists”. They do not use any equipment except their senses.

At the start of my training, my homework was to visit at least one property once a day for the first few years. After that, my senses could detect the incoming energy in the environment and its direction. There was no need to use the luopan (feng shui compass). If you know the direction and, therefore, immediately know the characteristics of the energy. This knowledge is ingrained in your brain because of frequent usage.

For me, this was the first step in climbing to the top level of feng shui practice.

At the turn of the 21st Century, I was selected to join a closed group under my Master – Shyan Tseng (Blue Dragon Feng Shui), who has at least five decades of international experience at the highest level.

I trained and worked as part of a team working on property development projects in various parts of the world. After ten years of work experience, I use this work experience in my practice.

All work is regulated by the practice, rules and ethos of Alliance Feng Shui.

This is the way how the actual knowledge is being passed down from Master to disciple (student). It is still being carried out to this present day.

2. When the Master, who is a practitioner, is looking to pass on the knowledge, he looks for students for the next generation. 3. The practice is handed down from Master to disciple (student) either individually or in small groups. The training is on-site, and the student serves as an apprentice for a number of years.

4. Students are selected for their potential to contribute to society with their knowledge and experience. High ethical standards are expected. There is a disciplinary procedure when standards do not meet the expectation.

5. Work ranges from small (single person dwellings) to large projects (design of cities). Teams are involved in larger projects. Team members have trained together and performed to the same standard of practice, knowledge and interpretations.

6. When the Master is sufficiently confident of a student, he is allowed to practise on their own. The Master is always there for support.

7. Later, when the student has gained sufficient experience and has established his name and is making the Master proud. The Master awards the student a lineage holder status with a lineage name. This comprises of the generation name and a personal name.

8. The lineage society holds regular meetings for updates and reunions. The Master keeps a watch over his students to maintain the exacting high standards of practice in helping people.

My Master describes this process as refining a rough diamond to finely polished, refined so that sparkles brightly.
