Feng Shui Of Your Entrance Hall

The Entrance Hall is the most significant room on the property. This article is about the 16 practical and effective steps to improve the Feng Shui of your Entrance Hall. The benefit for the residents is to see their quality of life improve resulting from the application of Feng Shui.

A welcoming Entrance Hall not only gives an excellent first impression to visitors and also a lasting impression. The Entrance Hall is essentially a microcosm of the property and the people who reside there.

It is always worth spending time and thought on this topic. It is worth the benefits that you can get.

The other purpose of the entrance hall is for the residents to prepare to go out by putting on their outdoor attire (clothes and shoes). The reverse occurs when they enter the property, remove their outdoor clothes and change to their indoor clothes.

From the feng shui point of view, the entrance hall is probably the only room where the energy from the exteriors comes directly into the house. After the energy has settled, it is then distributed throughout the property.

It is this incoming energy that determines the quantity and quality of the feng shui of the property. The larger the entrance hall, the greater the amount of energy for the feng shui of the property.

The quality of the energy is determined by the directional properties of the energy. Hence the importance of the compass direction of the energy flow.

Ideally, the size of the entrance hall has to be significant, so it can hold as much energy as possible and fulfil several essential functions. Unfortunately, many existing and new properties are not able to devote such ample space to this room.

It is important that this room is to be brightly lit, welcoming and free of clutter.

This article is about making the most of your current situation. It is about improving what you have with the resources that are commonly available.

An ideal set-up for the entrance hall. It is neat and tidy.

1. Storage of outdoor clothes and shoes for the Feng Shui of your Entrance Hall:

Nothing is worse than seeing coats and other clothes in an untidy pile. Secondly, to see shoes and slippers being scattered all over the floor of the entrance hall. Ideally, they should be stored in a cupboard or a tidy rack either in the entrance hall or, if there is no space, in another room.

When there is no order, it gives the appearance of clutter which implies disorganisation. It could be shoes, clothes, bags, shopping, backpacks or any other thing. This gives a very bad impression to visitors; it gives the impression of disinterest, disorder or disharmony in the house.

From the Feng Shui point of view, when things are scattered, there is no direction for the energy. This energy becomes disjointed.

Either storage units can be made in the entrance hall, or the various items be stored in cupboards in other rooms.

2. Chair

A chair to sit comfortably and put on or remove your shoes. If there is insufficient space in the entrance hall, a chair or a stool can be made available in an adjoining room.

3. Colour

When the room is small, a lighter shade of colour is preferred. These can be either lighter shades of beige or grey – the two most practical and fashionable colours at the moment.

4. Mirror

The purpose of hanging a mirror is to "expand" the room. It can also bring in the light from the exteriors to improve luminosity.

When hung judicially, it can give the impression of bringing the outdoors inside.

Another function of the mirror is a full-length mirror. Again, this is to check whether the complete attire is satisfactory. Nothing is more embarrassing than finding out later that something is out of place.

Care when placing the mirror – you do not want it to reflect the outdoors. In other words, it is sending back the energy from where it has come from – back to the exteriors. Do not place the mirror facing the door directly.

The other place where the mirror should not be placed is reflect the door to the washroom. Is there no need to double the loss of energy from the entrance hall?

5. Door Mats

Mats with words like “Welcome” or the “family name” on mats can be a “dangerous” affair. People brush their dirty shoes on the mats. Symbolically, stamping your dirty shoes on the word “Welcome” or your family name is terrible.

Therefore, it might not be a good idea to have words on the floor mats.

6. Luminosity

The Entrance Hall should be bright and warm. This gives the feel of being welcoming. Unfortunately, not all properties are fortunate to have natural light streaming through the glass to the entrance hall.

The front door or its side panel might not get the natural sunlight because it is facing in the north direction or in a dark alley where there is no natural light.

7. Artificial Lighting:

Should the entrance hall be considered to be insufficiently dark, do not be afraid to use indoor lights to brighten the entryway. The new technology LED lights are economical to run and make a significant difference in creating a warm and welcoming environment.

The lights can be table lamps, wall lamps or lights from the ceiling.

Having a light can make a big difference in the mood or feelings. It gives a different atmosphere – a warmer one.

8. Location

The entrance hall is where the energy from the outdoors comes into the property. The larger the hall, the greater the energy that can settle before it can be distributed to the various parts of the property. Therefore, leakage in this hall should be kept to a minimum.

Firstly, should there be a toilet or bathroom with a door opening to the entrance hall, keep this door shut as much as possible. You do not want unnecessary leakage of this energy.

Secondly, are they any other door exits from the entrance hall? These exits can drain the energy from the entrance hall very quickly.

9. Flooring

Wooden floors are preferred. Properly fitted, they are hard wearing but also impressive in their appearance.

The entrance hall usually has a high footfall. This can result in well-trodden marks on carpets, which show their age quickly. This does not give a good impression.

I have seen some properties that have used tiles or marble. They are hard wearing and do not show their age, especially with rough treatment or heavy footfall.

10. Cleanliness

The Front door opens out to the road, and there will be dust and other debris blowing into the property. It would be a good idea to clean this area regularly. Dirt that has settled in the entrance hall can spread widely around the property very quickly because of the heavy footfall.

11. Plants

This is an attempt to bring the outside atmosphere indoors. There should not be any problems if you have the space to display the plants. The typical plants in feng shui are the Chinese Money Plant and Peace Plant but avoid spikey or cactus plants or mother-in-law tongues with pointed leaves.

Large and bright coloured flowers are most welcoming. But, once the flowers have bloomed, do remove them. You do not want “dead” or yin items in the entrance hall.

12. The Front Door

This is the gateway for people to enter the property. Keep the door well maintained as first impressions count.

In the UK, the front door opens inwards. However, when a door porch is added to the property, the door opens outwards.

The energy going into the property is different.

When the door opens inwards, it just allows the energy in front of the entrance to come in, whereas, when it opens outwards, the open door collects the energy from a particular direction. In other words, it is more controllable.

It depends on exactly what you want.

13. Home Security

This is particularly important in these times. We do not want unwelcome visitors to the property.

The doors should have good locks like mortice deadlocks which can only be opened with a proper key.

The door should be solid enough to prevent being forced open with a crowbar or any other device.

14. Storage for car or house keys:

A table with a small drawer would be a convenient facility to store items of immediate use – like keys or car keys. However, with the modern car fobs, it is best to keep them in a signal-blocking Faraday box or sleeve. This is to prevent remote use of the fob by potential car thieves.

15. Decorations:

These can be pictures or items. The important point is that it should portray a happy or cheerful home. There should not be images of problems, disasters or problems. IT is all about a happy home.

A helpful suggestion would be images of the happy times of the family or residents.

Do not be afraid to spend the money and time to think it through. This is the room that gives the first impression to visitors. You want to give a good impression.

16. Stairs

In the UK, most properties have staircases facing the front door in the entrance hall. From the feng shui point of view, this is not encouraged as the energy from the upper floor can flow down to the front door very easily.

The preferred layout of the staircase is when the bottom rungs do not face the front door.

Commentary:

The Entrance Hall is literally, from the feng shui perspective, the most important room on the property. This is where the energy comes into the property and is then distributed throughout. The aim of the Hall is to gather as much energy as possible and minimise the losses before distribution.

From the point of the residents, this is the first room that visitors saw. First impressions are lasting impressions. Therefore, it is worth spending the money to achieve this goal.
