Wimbledon Hill Road and The Broadway. Why the difference?

I have lived in Wimbledon and always wondered why, the area nearer the hill (Wimbledon Hill Road) was always so busy but further down, at The Broadway, it was quiet with the shops at the lower end of the market.

Both Putney High Street and Wimbledon Hill Road/ Wimbledon Broadway get their energy from the hill between Putney and Wimbledon.

As mentioned previously, Putney High Street is a busy Shopping street as it gets its energy from the hill – Putney Heath. This energy is held by the River Thames at Putney Bridge.

Wimbledon Hill Road is at the other end of the hill. The energy flows down the hill on Wimbledon Hill Road. The shops between Mansell Road and the Railway station are busy and relatively upmarket.

After the Railway station, the energy has weakened as it flows down The Broadway. The shops are less busy and are at the lower end of the market than in Wimbledon Hill Road.
