Trends for Period 8 – 2004 to 2024.

Period 8 is modelled on the 3rd son in his late teens and early twenties. He is an introvert who keeps to himself. However, he is very good with his hands, studious,  thoughtful of other people requirements and frugal. 

The element for the Period is yin earth.

Trends - Personal

There has been a drift towards young male celebrities – Daniel Radcliffe, Harry Styles, Tom Hardy.

There has been the rise of young males who do exceedingly well based on their skills - Mark Zuckerberg (Facebook), Jack Dorsey (Twitter), Elon Musk (Tesla), Jeff Bezos (Amazon).

Entrepreneurs have been setting up their own businesses with great success. Companies or established businesses are not succeeding as much. This can be seen in the use of technology with the rise of the influencer. These are individuals  A person who works to be well known and good at self-promotion.

There will be more interest in studies. Hence the expansion of institutions of higher learning.

There also will be a revival in the practice of true craftsmanship and the rise of artisans. This not only includes the old-fashioned crafts like furniture making, shoemakers but, most importantly, the craft of cooking and baking. Just look at the number of TV shows and books on food but other crafts. On the BBC, there is a series on the Repair Shop – it is about restoring old and damaged items.

The spending exuberance of the previous Period is reversed when people ask themselves – Do I find happiness in material goods? People start to find happiness from within – this rise of therapies and counsellors.

Appearance – This is less important with clothes becoming more casual.

Enjoyment – This will be more about doing alone or with family – watching TV, electronic games, cooking and eating food or travelling.

Trends – Commerce

There is the emergence of nanotechnologies. This could be very small scale man-made materials – artificial material semiconductor, robotics or in the biological system – DNA or RNA manipulation.

Rise of artificial intelligence and advanced software.

Food-related industries and entertainment industries – electronic games, media content TV channels – Netflix or music – Spotify

Trends - Property

The energy comes from the Northeast. Therefore, there will be development changes from the Northeast of London (Cambridge) down to Poole in the Southwest.

There have been significant changes in Cambridge – it is no longer a small University city but a vast sprawl of high technology industries and academia. Then, there is the newly developed whole infrastructure for biomedical research where the Drugs Giant Astra Zeneca moved from Alderley Edge (Manchester). It is huge.

The Northeast of London has changed significantly at the Olympic site at Stratford and Hackney Wick. There has been a total regeneration of this area. Stratford has become a transport hub for East London and the adjacent regions. A massive shopping complex has been built there. In the Olympic Park, the Olympic stadium has been renamed “London Stadium”. This is where the Premier League football team West Ham United play.

In the Southwest part of London, the whole of Battersea and Nine Elms has been regenerated with massive residential tower blocks. The new US Embassy is located within this regeneration scheme.

Further away from London is the redevelopment of Woking town. There is a new shopping centre, offices, hotel and residential accommodation. There are at least five tower blocks over 30 storeys high, with plans for ten more tower blocks at various parts of the town.

This Northeast to Southwest corridor ends in Poole, which is the financial hub of the South Coast. Adjacent to Poole is the peninsula of Sandbanks, where beach fronting houses are at a premium – their prices match central London. That is £4 million upwards.

Design of Large buildings – instead of skyscrapers, there are ground scrapers – structures that are large, sprawly and low. Their exterior colours are earth tones.

Businesses that will do exceptionally well

Property development – commercial and residential. Not everywhere but selected areas.

Nanotechnology – on synthetic and biological materials. Robotics and manipulation of genetic material (DNA and RNA) in biological systems. The effective vaccines for the Covid used mRNA and viral handling technologies.
