Trends for Period 7 – 1984 to 2004

Period 7 is modelled on the 3rd daughter in her late teens and early twenties. She is loud-mouthed, spendthrift, has low moral standards, loves cheap flashy jewellery and money.
The element for the Period is yin metal.
Trends (Personal)
Rising young female celebrities: These included personalities like Debbie Harry. Brooke Shields. The prominent pop group of that era was the Spice Girls.
A new class of celebrities who were not exceptionally skilled but were “famous” for being “famous”. These included the Osbourne Family, Paris Hilton, Katie Price aka Jordan.
Presentation or appearance became important. This resulted in greater awareness in businesses associated with impression to the person or business—the rise of fashion and associated companies and retailers. In addition, we saw the importance of design, colour, communications, and public relations in the business sector, amongst others.
The expression “Style over Substance” was frequently used as there was more emphasis on the presentation of the product rather than the internal mechanism.
People have become more materialistic; wealth and possessions mattered more than anything else.
There was a trend in cheap jewellery, especially shiny and “loud” or noticeable. The word “bling” came into common usage.
The partying scene grows. Increase in the use of drugs and drink.
Trends - Commerce
The industries that have become very important were the communications sector. Companies like Public Relations, Advertising Agencies, Media Specialists have appeared and offer related services. Also, numerous radio stations appeared. More significantly, satellite and cable television channels started to develop, which offered more choice. As a result, the communications sector grew with media stars, stations and channels.
Growth in the Retailing sector. Retailers dominated the High Street. The best selling products were design-led. The term – “Designer” was the de-rigueur statement. There were the services – hair stylist, manicure, pedicure, spa and I could go on.
Another trend was the increase in pornography. The British Newspapers concentrated more on sleaze and even more gossip.
Types of Business that did well
There was the rise of the Personal Computer. The personal computer increased productivity considerably so that a single person could set up a business from home. This was the rise of the personal computer and associated industries.
The Financial Sector grew beyond all recognition worldwide, especially in London.
The communications industry expanded. TV, Radio stations, print media, grew so did the personalities who worked with them. Mobile phones have become the latest hot innovation.
The retail industry expanded to provide for the extravagance of young people – especially females. This means - fashion, cosmetics, footwear, jewellery.
There will be the rise of Corporations or “Big Business”.
Trends - Property
Shopping Centres and Retail Parks were built in many locations.
The Energy comes from the West and makes changes in the areas from the West to the East of London.
There was significant growth in the West from Bristol, Bath, Swindon, Reading to the East of London, ending in the Thames Estuary.
Outside London, the Thames Valley around Reading became Europe’s Silicon Valley which had the nickname – Silicon Corridor. It was centred around the Winnersh Triangle. This region was fast-growing, and this was the place where computer hardware and peripherals were located. Computer hardware is classed as metal.
Heathrow Airport became the busiest airport in the World. It was supported by a vast network of industries and manpower around the airport in Hayes, Uxbridge and other further afield, including the neighbouring counties of Surrey, Buckinghamshire and Berkshire.
In London, the areas on the west side of London – Uxbridge, Acton, Hayes, Chiswick, Kensington saw a rapid growth in property prices and redevelopment.
To the East of London, there was the massive Docklands Regeneration scheme where the old docks were converted to residential property. Canary Wharf was redeveloped into a huge office complex. It is now London’s second financial centre employing more than 250 thousand people.
Improved communications were developed like the Light railway network and improved roads. The river started to be used as part of the transport network,
There was a trend for building to be tall and covered with glass tinted with a metallic colour like silver or gold.
