Feng Shui in the Kitchen - Purpose
Dr. Michael Oon
The kitchen is the centre of the home.
- It is the focal point where food is prepared and eaten.
- It is usually the warmest and friendliest.
- It is the centre point of communication for the whole family.
- Everybody goes there.
The main function of food preparation has not changed over the ages but what has changed is the peripherals.
In the olden days, say the middle of the 20th Century, the kitchen in Singapore was very basic. There was a stove for cooking, a chopping board, a cleaver and a wet area for washing up. The raw food was bought for the day. The only storage areas were for the few cooking pots and eating utensils. Not every house had a fridge.
Today, it is totally different. It is not only the centre for food preparation but a host of other things.
1. It is a food storage centre.
Fridge freezer. In some properties I have been to, it is not one but two or three units
Refrigerated Wine storage
Larder cupboard
Cupboards
Pull out units
Food carousel
Spice racks
2. Storage for food preparation equipment
Food processors – large, medium and small (spices)
Food mixers, blenders and juicers
Ice cream machines
Hand mixers
Air fryers
Slow cookers
Kettle
Toaster
3. Storage
Hand utensils for food preparation – knives, ladles, measuring cups, thermometers etc
Cutlery
Pot and pans
4. Fixed Electrical Equipment
Hob (Stove)
Ovens
Grill
Microwave
Steam oven
Dishwasher
Washing machine and dryer (in many households)
5. Water Based Equipment
Water softener
Drinking water filter
In-line kettle for water
Then, there is space required for a workbench where the food is prepared.
On top of that, it is a place to consume food – it is a breakfast room or dining room.
Communications Centre – notes for shopping or reminders etc. This is the place where everybody visits.
This is the place where you could place Aspirational and Inspirational pictures for the family.
When implementing the feng shui of the kitchen, the consultant has to adapt these technological changes to the Eight Mansion formula which has been used for more than a century.
When implementing the feng shui, the consultant has to consider these changes and adapt. The eight mansions compass formula is fixed in the text, but how is it implemented. What is the best way to implement feng shui for the benefit for the family?
