The Eight Mansions Formula is one of the more important and effective formulae in Feng Shui. Each person, based on their date of birth, has 4 good and 4 bad directions.

Using the Eight Mansions Feng Shui Formula, each person has a preferential direction of sleep. The direction meaning compass direction.
In the formula, each person has a personal Kua number between 1 and 9 based on the person’s year of birth. The year starts on 4th February to 3rd February of the following year. The kua numbers for males and females are different.
For each kua number, there are 4 good and 4 bad compass directions.
Good Directions
- Sheng Qi – Prosperity Direction
This direction is for prosperity, good fortune and success. People in Business especially should tap in this direction to advance their wealth acquisition.
2. Tien Yi – Health Direction
This is the direction for improving your health
3. Nien Yen – Relationship Direction
If you are looking for a relationship or maintaining a relationship, this is the direction to go for.
4. Fu Wei – Personal Growth Direction
The direction for furthering ones personal growth
Bad Directions
- Huo Hai – Bad luck Direction
This direction leads to struggle and failure which brings hardship and bad luck to one’s life
2. Wu Gui - Five Ghosts Direction
Negative Energy that leads to deceit and backstabbing.
3. Liu Shi - Six Killings Direction
The direction that spoils all relationships albeit professional of personal.
4. Jueh Ming – Total Loss Direction
The most dangerous direction and is to be avoided.

In the Male column, the kua 5 has 2 in backets or parenthesis. This means that the male of kua 5 takes on the properties of kua 2.
In the Female column, the kua 5 has 8 in brackets or parenthesis. This means that the female of kua 5 takes on the properties of kua 8.

She is Kua 9.
Her best directions are:
East (Sheng Qi, Wealth), Southeast (Tian Yi, Health), North (Nien Yuen, Relationships), South (Fu Wei, Personal Growth)
It is best that the head of the bed faces one of these directions. According to Eight Mansions, there is no significant benefit if the bed points in the bad directions.
Her main aim at this point to get a relationship. Therefore, she would point her bed to the North (Nien Yuen) – the relationship direction.
Example 2
Male born May 1986.
He is Kua 5 which takes on the directions of kua 2
His best directions are:
Good directions: Northeast (Sheng Qi, Wealth), West (Tian Yi, Health), Northwest (Nien Yuen, Relationships), Southwest (Fu Wei, Personal Growth)
He is starting out in business and dearly wants to succeed. Therefore, his wealth direction (Sheng Qi) is Northeast. Therefore, he should point his bed to the Northeast direction.
