8 Concepts that Help Architects approach Feng Shui

A Short blog post by Helen Doherty.

Helen is a Consultant practising Traditional Feng Shui and a Registered Architect based in New Mexico, USA.

"Consider that feng shui is about energy, physics – motion and the vibrations that we sense as light, heat, color and gravity:

1. The main door is the mouth through which energy enters a building. Just like the mouth on your face is how you get food energy into your body. Is it proportioned correctly? Is there something in front of it? Is it set too far back?

2. Toilets. What is it about toilets? The waste-lines are usually the largest in a house or building, and the act of flushing creates a resonant effect.

Do not put a toilet near the front/main door.

Do not stack a bathroom over a kitchen, or let them share a wall.

3. The bedroom is a place to restore your energy. Keep it proportioned for restfulness. Ensure that it can be darkened.

4. The shape of the building in plan and elevation is important so that it does not imbalance the energy flow – no acute angles or elongated protrusions.

5. The kitchen/stove is where the nutrition comes for the occupants. In order to maintain good decision-making and communication do not put the kitchen/stove in the NW or SE.

6. When you hear the feng shui consultant mention the five elements – wood, fire, earth, metal, water – think about ‘movement of energy’: spreading, upward, stable, focusing, downward, respectfully. There are multiple other qualities to the 5 elements but that would take a much longer article.

7. Mirrors (fire) are commonly misused and overused by feng shui consultants. Keep them to a minimum – restrict their placement to bathrooms and closet areas.

8. Water features are also commonly misused and overused by feng shui consultants. They are unnecessary except for temporary results."

By employing all five branches of Chinese metaphysics she helps clients strategize and provides meaningful guidance on business and personal decisions.

“My inquiry into metaphysics began in architecture school as a search for a transcendent approach to design. I had a visceral suspicion - that there must be clues in the environment that tell us HOW. I found the confirmation in the methods of traditional feng shui.”

She uses feng shui methods that have been passed from master to student through dozens of generations, and is a member of Alliance Feng Shui (AFS), a select international organization of experts that concentrates on traditional feng shui for the corporate client.
