Rockfield Studios are the brainchild of 2 brothers – Kingsley and Charles Ward, on their farm in the countryside of Wales.

In 1965, they became the first residential recording studio with an eight-track tape deck. It was ideally suited for musicians to come and stay in the quiet and peaceful Welsh countryside to record.

Their first big recording hit was Dave Edmunds “I heard you knocking” in 1970. Since there have been the, who’s who of musicians working in the studios, they have included Rush, Oasis, Iggy Pop, Nigel Kennedy, Simple Minds, Coldplay, Black Sabbath, Robert Plant and in 1975, Queen with their signature recording ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’.

About the Studios, Kingsley was interviewed by Sean Fletcher in the programme “Wonders of the Border” he said;

“I think today, Rockfield is possibly, the one with the greatest heritage that is still working. I think a lot of things happened at the right time for us. We had a lot of luck as well.”
