This post on Feng Shui Objections is based on the comments that I have experienced in my career of more than 20 years as a Feng Shui Consultant. I have found that these feng shui objections are a result of the lack of clarity on the subject rather than ideological.
This post is to help readers explain the facts to negate the feng shui objections.
The Feng Shui Objections are:
- “Eastern Mumbo Jumbo” Is it relevant to the people in the modern society in the West?
- I believe in creating my own luck. I do not depend on others.
- My religious beliefs state that God can only help me.
- I am in the process of selecting a new property for my family. Is there any point in asking a feng shui consultant to give his opinion on the properties that I short list? Employing a consultant will only add cost of purchasing the property.
- What is the basis of Feng Shui? It is not science as we know it.”
- I have been working on my personal development – both body and mind for the past 10 years. I have not heard of feng shui, can I benefit from it?
- I have read a few articles and books on feng shui, they appear to contradict each other.
- Feng Shui might be big in the Far East but is it used in the West? The main point is – Do the Successful corporation in the West use it.
- I have called in a total of 3 consultants to my house. What should I do next, call another?
- Why should I pay for a consultant? Books and magazines make it look so simple? I can do it myself.
Feng Shui Objections 1:“Eastern Mumbo Jumbo” Is it relevant to the people in the modern society in the West?
Feng Shui was developed some 40 centuries ago with the rise of the Chinese Civilisation. It is about understanding how nature works and maximizing it for the benefit of the people. It is about being able to get a better living in the environment that you are in.
Feng Shui is still be used effectively in this modern age of the 21st Century. Corporations are using it successfully; small business are using it to expand their business and people are using it to improve their quality of life.
Feng Shui is a Chinese study of the various environmental factors that affect the human habitation. The only topic of study in the West which considers the environment assisting or aiding the living is the “Terroir” – the environment factors that affect the growth of grape vines for the production of wine.
Feng Shui is used not only in China and the Far East; it is now used in the West (Europe and North America).
The Chinese, with their earlier start to continuous civilisation, has a number of inventions that are in common use today – paper, porcelain, compass, fireworks/heavy artillery, noodles/pasta, printing, bureaucracy or government, to name a few. We use these inventions because it adds to our lives.
It is even more relevant today as we are living in a fast-paced society. It is not only getting more crowded and but there is increasing pollution which affect the well-being of the people.
Feng Shui Objections 2:
I believe in creating my own luck. I do not depend on others.
Would you go into “battle” with one arm tied behind you back?
When I go to “battle”, I muster all the possible resources that I can to win the “battle” easily.
What is the basis for my statement?
One tenet of Chinese Philosophy is the “Trinity of Luck”.
In the Trinity of Luck, your life is governed by the 3 “lucks“ – Heaven, Earth and Man with each contributing an equal one third share.
Heaven Luck – This is your destiny or your life path. This can be decoded with a Horoscope or Chinese Destiny Reading (BaZi).
BaZi reveals the cycles of time that you are around you. It reveals to you when you have periods of auspicious luck and inauspicious luck. These can be cycles of 1 year or 10 years but it is a general method.
Earth Luck – This is how the Earth or environment contributes to your destiny. Feng Shui is a Chinese System of Land Management and is a method to improve your Earth Luck
Man Luck – This the effort that you put into the work. You are solely in charge of this.
Therefore, if you are only content in creating your own luck, you are only utilizing or considering Man Luck. That is one third of your luck.
When you involve Feng Shui, you are using 2 “lucks” which comprises of two-thirds.
Combined, this involves two thirds of your life. This is what I mean by fighting with both arms.
How would I do it?
To get the project done, I would have both Feng Shui and Man Luck
Do you want to go into battle with all “three lucks?” Three arms perhaps?
In addition to Feng Shui (Earth Luck) and your effort (Man Luck), you can refer to your destiny (Heaven Luck) or get assistance with precise timing by using Auspicious Timing including QiMen DunJia. I can refer you to a colleague who will help you out.
Feng Shui Objections 3:
My religious beliefs state that God can only help me.
Where do you draw the line about help?
Using a car is getting help in transportation. What do you do for transportation? Do you use a bus, taxi or car? Or, do you just walk?
Using a phone is getting help to communicate. How do you communicate with other people that are far away? Do you use a phone?
Feng shui is not spiritual, religious or a ritual. It is A Chinese Philosophy about harnessing the energy on the earth’s surface to help you improve your quality of life.
Feng Shui Objections 4:
I am in the process of selecting a new property for my family. Is there any point in asking a feng shui consultant to give his opinion on the properties that I short list? Employing a consultant will add to the cost of purchasing the property.
A house purchase is the largest and most significant purchase that you will be making. You will not only be living there but there is a huge commitment of your time, your dedication to your family and your hard-earned money. The home is a place for you to fulfil your dreams and ambitions.
Have a second opinion. A person who is acting for you on your largest purchase.
The information you are receiving on the property is from the estate agent who is being paid and acting on behalf of the vendors. They want a sale and present the property in the best possible light.
A surveyor gives a report only on the technical aspects of the property.
The solicitor is looking at the property from the legal perspective.
What is the risk of not using the service?
You like the property and it fits your requirements. You accept what the estate agents say – they are acting for the vendors.
You do not know whether the character of the house is suitable for you and your family but far more importantly – you do not know whether the house will benefit you? Will you be more prosperous or suffer problem after problem.
What the benefits using the service?
You have the assurance from an independent consultant who is working in your best interests.
The consultant will answer the questions:
Will the property be good for you and your family – will you progress, stagnate or deteriorate with regards to your prosperity and happiness?
If it is not beneficial, can it be improved with modifications?
Initially, you can refer me to the property on the internet and I can make a comment whether it is worth having a second look.
The service cost is from £500 and we can visit between 3 and 5 number of properties in close proximity in half a day.
How significant is this cost?
The purchase of the property is from £500,000 to a number of millions.
This is literally less than 0.1% of the purchase price and you get a peace of mind.
Feng Shui Objections 5:
What is the basis of Feng Shui? It is not science as we know it.
The developments since the industrial revolution, some 300 years ago, have been based on scientific method. These developments are from the steam engine, the steam train to the internet, mobile phone, computers, cars, television and so on.
I worked as a Forensic Scientist with London’s Metropolitan Police for 20 years and have a PhD in Biological Sciences. Therefore, I know quite a bit on scientific method.
Let us do the definition bit first:
Definition: Science is the pursuit, application of knowledge, the understanding of the natural and social world following a systematic methodology based on:
- Critical analysis
The key part is the word is evidence.
We know that when we mix fluor, water and yeast in various proportions and bake the mixture, we get bread. When the procedure is followed repeatedly, the end product is consistent.
When a different method with additional ingredients like egg and sugar – we get cake as the product. Again, if the procedure is followed repeatedly, the end product is consistent.
Evidence and Critical Analysis
Since the formation of planet Earth, objects have always stayed on the surface. The only things that are above the surface of the earth are things blown by the wind or by powered flight like birds or airplanes. Otherwise, items have always remained on the surface.
Sir Isaac Newton (1642-1726) noticed that the apple would always fall from the tree to the ground. He formed the theory of gravity. Gravity is the universal force of attraction which exists between all forms of matter.
This is an example of evidence – his observation that all things would fall to the surface of the earth.
Critical Analysis – From this observation, Newton formulated the theory of gravity.
Evidence and Critical Analysis
The migration of birds.
Every year, birds migrate flying thousands of miles to the warmer parts of the world for their winter nesting session. They would fly thousands of miles and arrive from the same location they have departed from some months previously. This would be done repeatedly and consistently.
The question asked is how do they do it?
Birds have for centuries flown these migratory routes and these birds are still around to this present day. This shows that this migration is a success. The point is, science still cannot explain precisely the mechanism, but it works.
Example 4: Evidence and Critical Analysis
Humans identifying the North South Compass axis
I know of persons who can identify the North South compass axis reproducibly and consistently without the aid of instrumentation. The accuracy is impressive – to the nearest 3 degrees. I can identify the south direction to about 10 degrees which is sufficient for the initial stages of my feng shui work.
Persons being able to identify the North/South compass reliably. There is a suggestion by John Edward Huth in the book “The Lost Ark of Navigating Your Way” that humans have magnetoreceptors which can pick up the magnetic field which helps identify the north/south axis. This ability has to be developed in the first place.
As in the previous example of birds, the phenomena exists but science cannot show how it works or exists.
Example 5: Evidence and Critical Analysis
Feng Shui or the Management of the Land
The ancient Chinese people who managed the land observed how nature interacted with humans over time. Their observations were refined over the centuries.
In ancient China, especially during the period of warring states (475 to 221 BC), there were numerous battles between the various states. The prosperous states could afford better generals, wiser advisers and bigger armies. They were able to defeat the armies of the poorer states. The rulers of more prosperous states attributed their prosperity to the land managements of the state (feng shui).
Some “battle tested” observations.
A property in a valley is more auspicious than one isolated on a hill top.
A property on the “upstream” side of a bridge is more prosperous that one on the “downstream” side of the bridge.
A coffee or tea shop near a junction was more auspicious that one along the street.
Traditional (lineage) feng shui is a time proven methodology that helps provide a better living environment for the people. The main driver is the Qi or energy. According to Chinese Philosophy, the more energy in the location, the more auspicious it becomes.
These 3 locations are examples where the energy settles in preference to others.
As a scientist, I would consider Traditional (lineage) Feng Shui is a science. This is based on the evidence, repetition and critical analysis.
Feng Shui Objections 6:
I have been working on my personal development – both body and mind for the past 10 years. I have not heard about feng shui. Is it of any benefit to me?
Feng Shui is the Chinese system of land management. If you get the environment around you right, the benefits include better luck in your health, wealth and happiness.
Feng Shui started 4,000 years ago with the rise of Chinese Civilisation. It was a body of knowledge on how to set up land dwellings where the inhabitants can live safely and prosper. This knowledge developed as the various states battled in the “period of warring states” (475 to 221 BC). The winning states attributed their success to their prosperity from this body of knowledge. That was how feng shui became firmly embedded in Chinese Culture.
As in all aspects of Chinese Philosophy, the mechanism of Feng Shui is the movement of Qi or Energy. The more accumulation of energy, the greater the benefits for people in the property.
Feng Shui is the Chinese understanding of the forces of nature. Also, living in harmony with the natural environment. It is about reaping the benefits – these include improving your luck in the aspects of prosperity, health and relationships. Feng shui is mainstream in the Far East. Not only are houses designed with this Chinese system, but estates (both business & residential), shopping centres and cities.
Shopping Arcades in Mayfair – There are 3 shopping arcades in Mayfair, London. The busiest is Burlington Arcade. The other 2 arcades “Royal Arcade” and “Piccadilly Arcade” are very quiet and at times, you can hear a pin drop.
Burlington Arcade gets a lot of energy from the flow on energy in Mayfair. The other 2 arcades do not get energy. Hence, the business activity is much lower.
Site Selection – Starbucks: the American coffee shop chain locate their businesses at street corners. In feng shui, the energy in these locations is ideal for coffee shops. In some cities in the US, there can be up to 3 Starbucks coffee shops at a street crossroads.
This is one of the pillars that helped Starbucks in the world-wide growth.
The Street where you live: You would notice that some houses, the owners would change regularly. Some depart because of the breakup of the family or because of financial difficulty. Others move out to a larger house because of improvement in the finances. These changes happen repeatedly to the same houses.
Different houses get differing amounts of energy and hence, different outcomes.
How can you benefit from Feng Shui?
You can have your business and house looked over by a feng shui consultant (services). The consultant will be work to bring more energy to your home.
Feng Shui Objections 7:
I have read a few articles and books on feng shui; they appear to contradict each other
The Chinese, ancient and modern, has a tradition of lineage families or societies. The feng shui practise knowledge and skills are passed down by verbal instruction from generation to generation. The handing down of the knowledge is the training of an artisan – very practical, step by step instruction, thorough and usually lasting 10 years. The training is personal and individual. As a result, very few people are trained.
In many cases, the training is of a very high standard as the aim of the trainer (Master) is to get the students (disciple) to do better than himself. It is the Chinese tradition of leaving a “good name” – an honourable and lasting legacy.
In ancient China, it was only the scholars who could read and write. The artisans were very reluctant to share their knowledge with anyone as it would affect their “rice bowl” or livelihoods. They avoided scholars. It was known for scholars to document what they heard and claim the credit for the knowledge. This traditional knowledge has been left undocumented as it is passed down by verbal instruction. A check of the instruction is a rhythming couplet.
As a result of this information vacuum, there were groups of feng shui enthusiasts who marketed themselves as practitioners or teachers and provided an alternative view of the practice. Also, it was not uncommon for experts who were familiar with the basics of Chinese Philosophy like BaZi (destiny analysis) and others systems to apply their knowledge to the environment and then call it “feng shui”.
Contradictions arose as the information came from difference sources. Also, there were different interpretations of the same rule. These documents did not make any claims of validation. Rigorous testing would have determined whether the method work and what are the correct interpretations.
Modern authors, teachers and trainers have been relying on these ancient documents as their “source material”. It is not surprising that the contradictions have arisen from these wide variety of sources.
I have discussed this issue. I spent about 5 years trying to understand, the “true practise” of feng shui. We live by feedback so that we know whether we are on the right track or not. In most of published feng shui methods that I have encountered, it is a set of instructions. There is no way to test or validate the interpretation. In other Chinese philosophies for example – BaZi (destiny analysis) you can check whether the method works by the confirmation or the correct prediction. You build up your confidence by the experience of trial and error.
However, this does not happen with most practises of feng shui as feedback is not available. It took me a long time (more than a decade) to be able to have the ability to get feedback when using traditional (lineage) feng shui. With constant practise, I have improved my ability based on this feedback and client reviews.
My final point is:
There are essentially 2 types of feng shui books.
- To make Feng Shui simple – This is to attract the new reader to the article or book.
- To make feng shui complex – This is to show the feng shui enthusiast the complexity of feng shui and show how authoritative the author is. These are expensive limited-edition publications.
However it is presented, the text relies on the information from the same – ancient texts.
Feng shui is about the accumulation of energy in the property. The more energy, the better the quality of energy, the better outcome for the people in the property. The consultant using traditional (lineage) feng shui works to get the best available quantity and quality accumulated into the property with the minimal amount of leakage. This is for the benefit of the residents.
Feng Shui Objections 8:
Feng Shui might be big in the Far East but is it used in the West? The main point is – Do the Successful corporation in the West use it?
There are quite a number of corporations in both the UK and North America that have had feng shui implemented in their head office and other branches. The main reason these corporations have not publicised feng shui is because of Non-Disclosure Agreements. Feng Shui has always been used as a tool for Competitive Advantage.
An example of Competitive Advantage has been the public proclamation by the rulers in China both modern and past. They had banned or discouraged the use of feng shui but privately, the use it.
Let us go through the list of corporations that use feng shui:
Tesco – UK’s largest retailer.
In the 1990s, Tesco had ambition to become UK’s largest retailer. It had its new offices in Cheshunt designed with Feng Shui together with a number of their superstores. These superstores either faced South or West and had a unique layout in their car parks. There entrance doors were always left open for the energy to enter easily but in 2010s, it was decided to have automatic door openers to save on the heating bills.
Canary Wharf – London’s Second Financial Centre
This development was designed with feng shui from the start. This Financial Centre has head offices of international banks, major media businesses with offices for about 300,000 workers. It is very well connected to the rest of the UK and the world with its own transport links – road, trains and airport (London City Airport).
Costco stores – in North America and UK.
Costco is the third largest retailer in the World
The design of the stores follows a particular template – with the entrance at the corner and particular location of the offices and kitchen. This design was carried out with the assistance of feng shui consultant.
Starbucks Coffee Shops – North America and Europe including UK
Starbucks is the largest coffee house chain in the World
Starbucks Coffee Shops are usually at street junctions or intersections. This is where the best energy for coffee shops is. This has been so successful for Starbucks that, in some US cities, there can be up to 3 Starbucks at the same road intersection. All three Starbucks have different types of cliental.
Walmart in Bentonville, Arkansas, United States
Walmart is the largest retailer in the world.
In the 1970s, the then small town of Bentonville had various feng shui features added to the town layout. The Walmart Head office was designed with feng shui as well as their stores. Most of their stores face East and there a number of unique features in the car park layout.
Bentonville is now a bustling city with many offices of suppliers to Walmart. Also, the city also supplies Walmart with other facilities.
I could go on to list further corporations in the other parts of the world including the Middle East, South East Asia and the Far East. A point of interest is the number of successful corporations that are based in the State of Washington. There are 2 listed above – Costco and Starbucks. But, when you look at the list of legendary corporates that dominate the world in their sector of business, you would be surprised. This includes Microsoft, Amazon amongst others.
I have worked on a number of businesses in the UK and I was called in on the 2nd round. Initially, they had just looked up the website or a directory and chose a consultant without going too deeply into the background. The main reason for feng shui is results and this is tangible with the business – were the targets achieved? I have helped business owners to meet or exceed the targets.
I have worked on numerous projects on the property design or improvements to help solve the business owner’s problems – site selection, initial design or improvement.
Feng Shui Objections 9:
I have called in a total of 3 consultants to my house. What should I do next, call another?
I employed the 1st consultant and I did not get the results that I wanted so I employed a 2nd and so on. Feng Shui does not work and why should I call another?
Without getting into the further details, I would like to give you some suggestions.
- The consultant is using methods that are part of the Chinese false formulae (https://michaeloon.com/feng-shui-consultant/#Fake). This provides the background story of how this evolved.
- Perhaps your targets are “too demanding” for feng shui. Feng Shui is a general method in the design of the property. It is good at increasing opportunity.
I would suggest that you investigate methods that involve auspicious timings like auspicious times, BaZi (Destiny Analysis), QiMen DunJia (Divination) or Da LiuRen (the highest level of Divination). They are very good at specific targets. If you are interested, I could put you in contact with my colleague who specialises in the highest level of auspicious timings.
Examples of specific objectives – to get to sign a contract, getting a new client etc. I have written some points to consider when looking at feng shui consultants to work with (in preparation).
Feng Shui Objections 10:
Why should I pay for a consultant? Books and magazines make it look so simple? I can do it myself.
This is what I heard from people who I have met.
- The methods in the books and magazines contradict each other.
- The same author can give different remedies for the same query.
- There is no consistency in the methods and this leads to confusion.
- There is no way of checking whether it has been implemented correctly.
- Simple? – Just look at “The Complete Idiots Guide to Feng Shui” – it is super complicated (for me).
- There is no mention of priorities – what is important and what is less so.
I have written previously about the content of authors. They have to pitch to the commissioning editor that their proposed work has a different angle from the existing published material. Generally, they are not practising consultants and do they have the resources to test what they have written. The main skill of authors and writers is writing.
Feng Shui, as described in the books, is not a tangible. A tangible subject is like cooking or power spray washing. Therefore, you do not know whether you have interpreted or implemented it correctly.
A trained feng shui consultant can help you with this.
This would save your time trying to decipher the various books and money spent. Also save on the purchase of feng shui accessories.
To save your hard-earned money and limited available time, just invest in the services of a feng shui consultant. It is faster and a surer way of getting the better results.
