The 8 compass directions have different properties. They all belong to a family of 8; 2 parents, 3 sisters and 3 brothers. Like any family, it is optimal when it is complete.

North West – Father – paternal, boss
South West – Mother – maternal, caring
South East – 1st Daughter – good marketer and business person
South – 2nd Daughter – loves food, pleasure and enjoyment
West– 3rd Daughter – bar girl, talks without thinking, argumentative, spendthrift
East – 1st Son – wannabe, striving to the top but cannot make it
North – 2nd son – Worrier, messy, drinker
North East – 3rd Son – craftsman, thinker, spiritual

1. Properties of the directions:

When the energy is coming from that direction, the energy has the above properties of that compass direction. I will cover more of this topic in a later posting.

2. Properties of a sector:

A sector is that part of the property relating to that direction. The North East sector is the North East part of the property.

In any property, it is preferred that the building have a regular shape – either square or rectangular. In other words, it is complete where all members of the family are present in equal proportions.

This is the optimal shape; there will be good family harmony.




Protrusion on the North East (NE) sector
At times, the house is not regular. In this case, there is a “protrusion” on the North East side. Therefore, the people in this property would be spiritual and thinkers. They would also be good with their hands – craftsman or appreciate the good things.




An irregular shaped house.
Protrusion on the North West. There is strict rules in this house (North West – paternal energy).
Missing South East corner – not good in marketing and in business.




Missing area in North West and North.
Missing NW – no strict rules, could be leaderless.
Missing North (N) – no worries.
Conclusion: This house is disorganised and chaotic.

All sectors are missing.
People in this property are getting nowhere fast.



These are examples of houses but they also apply to all buildings.

It states that the outcome of your life is the result of the interaction of three influences

1. Heaven Luck – your destiny – this can be elucidated through a personalised astrology reading. The chinese methodology is known as four pillars and ziwei doushou.

2. Earth Luck – you environment – the methodology to elucidate it is feng shui (Chinese land management system)

3. Man Luck – yourself (the person). Do you accept things happen to you or do you make things happen?

I have noticed, that there are a number of self motivated people, who are having continual success in their lives. Having checked their personal horoscopes. they continued to succeed even though their horoscopes had indicated that they are in a period of bad fate luck. They have used personal development techniques to improve their lives.

For example: use of visualisations, living for now, positive attitude etc.

This observation has been confirmed by getting to know people who use the personal development technique properly.

In this case, the contribution from the environment is one third and the contribution from the person is two thirds. They are able to bypass the comments of the horoscopes.

The pa kua square is one of the most important tools in feng shui let alone chinese philosophy.
This square relates to a compass direction to the family member – a family of parents with a total of 6 children, 3 sons and 3 daughters.

The characteristics of each family member related to the personality of that square.

For example: North West – father
characteristics – serious, stern, discipline
this square also relates to body parts – bones – the main structure of the body,

characteristics – studious, good with hands, honest & trustworthy,

An example of the void direction between N and NE is 022 degrees.
At this point, the energy has the characteristics of the 2 directions- N and NE. There is confusion as to the identity of the direction. This direction is, therefore, best to be avoided. Any property facing this direction would have “confusion” or the occupants be uncertain.

Void directions are also known as void lines

The minor void direction is 15 degrees later – see table. Properties facing this direction are also, not recommended.

The quality of this energy is poor and the direction is best avoided.

Of course, the energy from the exteriors comes through doors or entrances to the property.

This posting is about the various positions where doors are being positioned in the UK.

1. The prominent door.

The door is conspicuous and easy to find by any person. The energy in the surroundings will easily fill the property with energy.

2. The hidden door

The door is difficult to find. It will therefore be difficult for the energy to fill the property.

The door to the property in on the right side of the passage way. The door at the end of the passage way leads to the back of the property.

3. The blocked door.

These are examples where the entrances are not easy to find because they are blocked by various obstacles. These obstacles would also hindering the flow of energy to the door.

Once the energy gets into the building, it is distributed through the building. This is determined very much by the interior layout of the building.

Conclusion: A door in a prominent or an open position will get more energy from the exteriors than a door that is either hidden or blocked. Therefore, doors in prominent positions are preferred in feng shui.

It might appear to be random but within Chinese Philosophy, change is happening all the time.
One of the key books in the “I Ching” or “Yi Jing” it is known as the “book of changes”

Therefore, change is part of the way of life.

How can this change be predicted?

In Feng Shui, it deals with a number of cycles – 2 hr, 1 day, 1 month, 1 year, 12 years, 20 years, 180 years.

We encounter cycles in all our lives.

We are a cycle in it self – we are born, grow up, produce children, live and then die
This is similar to a product cycle
Other cycle includes – fashion – long or short skirts, colour
Types of businesses – filofax, PC, PDA, mobile phones, smartphones
Attitudes – Behaviour and dress was once very formal. At the office, we were only called by our surnames and expected to wear formal suits. Now, we use first names and casual attire is acceptable.

Secondly, in each 20 year cycle, the direction of the predominant energy is different. This change of energy direction explains the rise and fall of cities, or why certain parts of the city thrives or become ghost towns.

There are nine 20 year cycles. Each cycle, also known as Period, has a different characterisitics, each characterised a family member – parents (father, mother) and 6 children (3 sons and 3 daughters). In each period has the predominant energy energy coming from a particular compass direction.

Compass Directions

In this series of blogs, I will using the 8 compass directions or sectors (Chinese Style)

In the Western System for reading the compass. when we mean North East direction, we mean the exact direction of 45 degrees from magnetic North.
Whereas with the Chinese system, it is the segment of directions which are in that direction.
Using the example of a North East direction, it includes a range of directions which form a segment or sector – 22 to 67 degrees.

This system is known as 8 sectors.
Therefore, when it is stated “North East Energy”,it means, the energy comes from the North East sector.

So, how do you get the energy into the building, distribute and retain it.

1. The Entrance allows the energy to enter the building.

There are 2 aspects of energy – quantity and quality
Quantity – the more the better (of the correct type).
Quality – various aspects –
compass directions (to be covered later)

2. Distribution of Energy

Once the energy gets into the building, it has to be distributed throughout and evenly.
Without an even distribution, some parts will benefit from this energy and others will not.

The even distribution will depend very much on the design of the internal layout.
The image below shows another door located immediately after the entrance. Most of the energy escapes to the outside rather than remain within the property.
In other words, most of the incoming energy is lost.

3. Retention of energy: – the material used

Once the energy is distributed in the building, the energy has to be contained or else, it will leak away.
This is very much determined by the type of material of the property.

The type of material that holds the energy best is the traditional brick with windows configuration.

The material that does not hold the energy is the glass; that is why you can see through the material.
Therefore, buildings that are clad with glass are not preferred as the energy is not held, it leaks out.

Buildings with solid cladding like brick or solid blocks are far preferable to the modern day steel and glass.
